Four huts destroyed

in Gundlupet taluk

Chamarajanagar: Four huts were destroyed at Shivapura village in Gundlupet taluk on Saturday night. Three persons have been admitted to the Gundlupet government hospital. It is said that an argument between two persons over a trivial issue took a political turn. When power supply to the village was cut off, miscreants set fire to the huts of S.P. Suresh, Prasannakumar, Mahadeva Shetty and Puttaswamy, all Congress workers. Two houses were damaged in stone pelting.

KIOCL employees observe `Black Day'

Bangalore: Hundreds of employees of the Kudremukh Iron Ore Company (KIOCL) and members of their families observed New Year's Day as "Black Day" in the Kudremukh township.

They held a rally in the township and protested against the environmentalists for the closure of the mines. Many of the protesters were women and children.

According to reports reaching here, the rally was addressed, among others, by leaders of the employees Shankar Naik and Sanjeev Murthy.

Importance of art

forms highlighted

Udupi: Noted Yakshagana artiste Kumble Sundar Rao said on Sunday that art forms propagated eternal values to the people. He was speaking at the valedictory of "Vishwarupa," a national-level cultural fest, here.

He said that art forms such as Yakshagana not only entertained people but also had an educative value. They gave information about complex values propounded in the scriptures in the language of the common man, Mr. Rao said.

CWC to decide on tie-up

Bangalore: The Congress is leaving the question of forging an alliance with other parties in the zilla and taluk panchayats where it has failed to secure a majority to the Congress Working Committee.

Chief Minister N. Dharam Singh said here on Sunday that the CWC would meet in New Delhi on January 4 to take a decision on the matter.

KSRTC services

Bangalore: KSRTC has arranged direct bus services from towns adjoining Bangalore to Vidhana Soudha and vice versa for the benefit of regular commuters. The departure time and monthly pass charges are as follows: Kolar, 8 a.m., Rs. 1,040; Kanakapura, 8.30 a.m., Rs. 880; Anekal, 8.25 a.m., Rs. 600; Doddaballapur, 8.40 a.m., Rs. 600; Channapatna, 8 a.m., Rs. 880 and Tumkur, 8 a.m., Rs. 1,040. In return journey, the buses would leave Vidhana Soudha at 5.45 pm. The services would be inaugurated on Monday at 5.45 p.m. in front of the Vidhana Soudha Main Gate. — Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: The Railway Recruitment Board (RRB), Bangalore, will conduct the written examination for eight graduate categories under Employment Notice No. 1/2005 on January 8 between 10 a.m. and 11.30 a.m. Call letters have been despatched to eligible candidates. `Yellamavasya'

Udupi: Hundreds of devotees had bath in the Arabian Sea at Malpe near here on Saturday on the occasion of "Yellamavasya." They had the "darshan'' of Lord Balarama at the Vadabhandeshwara Temple. Special buses from the Udupi City Bus Stand took the devotees to the Vadabhandeshwara beach. After having bath at the "sarovar'' at the Vadabhandeshwara Temple, "Japa'' and "Tarpana'' rituals were performed. Water from the "sarovar'' was brought to the sea. After bathing in the sea, "tarpanas'' were given.

Workers plan protest

MANGALORE: Members of the Kudremukh Employees' Union will block the national highway in front of the office of Kudremukh Iron Ore Company Ltd at Panambur near here on Monday demanding that the Government take steps to enable KIOCL to continue mining at Kudremukh, according to a press release. Power shutdown tomorrow

DHARWAD: Power supply will be affected between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Tuesday in parts of Dharwad due to maintenance work. SIRSI: An elephant herd raided a coconut grove on Saturday and destroyed 10 coconut plants at Singanahalli in Mundgod taluk. The coconut grove belongs to Janata Dal (Secular) leader Venkatesh Hegde Hosbale. The herd of elephant is creating nuisance in the area since a month. Mr. Hegde has informed the Forest Department authorities about the incident. — Correspondent

DHARWAD: Karnataka Vikas Grameen Bank has launched a new deposit scheme called `Suvidha Flexi Deposit'. Launching the new scheme, B.S. ATM inaugurated

HUBLI: K.S. Kaladagi, Director, Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences, Hubli, inaugurated the first automated teller machine (ATM) facility of Vijaya Bank in Hubli at Lamington Road recently. Dineshchandra Hegde, Regional Manager, Vijaya Bank, and other senior officials of the bank were present. Gastroenteritis

BIDAR: Around 70 people took ill after gastroenteritis broke out in Anadur village of Bidar taluk on Saturday evening. Villagers told a team of presspersons that contamination of groundwater in the village was the reason for the outbreak of the epidemic.

They alleged that untreated effluents from a liquor factory in the vicinity of the village had polluted the groundwater table in teh area. — Staff Correspondent

Red Cross to distribute aids to the disabled

DAVANGERE: The district unit of the Red Cross Society of India will distribute tricycles, hearing aids and callipers to the disabled on Tuesday.

Vice-president of the society J.B. Siddappa and secretary K.S. Devaraj told presspersons here on Sunday that Deputy Chief Minister M.P. Prakash and Health Minister N. Cheluavarayaswamy will be present at the function. The State Bank of Mysore has donated Rs. 5 lakhs to buy the aids, they said and added that they will be given to disabled persons from Davangere, Jagalur and Harpanahalli in the first phase and to those from Harihar, Honnali and Chennagiri in the second phase. — Staff Correspondent

Cold storage ordered to pay compensation

BELLARY: The Bellary District Consumer Forum has directed M/s Prabhanjan Cold Storage to pay Rs. 11.98 lakhs in compensation, along with an amount of Rs. 2,000 to Parmi Lakshmaiah, a farmer.

Mr. Lakshmaiah had kept 1,226 bags of red chillies (dried) in the cold storage. After three months, he found chillies in 1,140 bags rotten. He filed an application before the Bellary District Consumer Forum seeking compensation.

A.A. Halageri, president of the forum and G. Basavaraj, a member, delivered the judgment after hearing the petitioner and respondent.

Appeal to authors

MYSORE: The Department of Public Libraries has appealed to authors to give their consent for digitisation of their Kannada books as part of the Government's decision to put on the Internet one lakh Kannada books as part of "Suvarna Karnataka" programme.

In a press statement, Director of Public Libraries said the Department had sent letters to authors seeking consent for digitisation of their books. "If some authors have not received it due to various reasons, please volunteer to provide the title of their book, year of publication and cost," it said. Workshop held

MYSORE: Rotary Mysore Midtown, in association with Department of Welfare of Disabled and Senior Citizens, organised a daylong workshop on Persons with Disability Act, 1995, at the Government School for Blind Children recently.
