HYDERABAD: Tragedy clouded New Year celebrations in some families as six youngsters died and 11 others were injured in road accidents after Saturday midnight in and around the city.

All of them were allegedly on a high and were zooming on their vehicles for year-end fun, the police said. A call centre executive M. Kalyan, 25, and a private factory supervisor J. Venkatesh, 24, got killed when the bikes they were riding collided head on near Qutbullapur `T' junction in Jeedimetla a little after midnight.

Head injuries to two

Gautam and Ravi, friends of the two victims riding pillion on the two bikes, sustained injuries. Kalyan of Kukatpally Housing Board Colony was going from Shapurnagar to Chintal while Venkatesh was coming to Qutbullapur from Chintal side. Both sustained serious head injuries. Venkatesh died at the Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences. After battling for life for over eight hours, Kalyan succumbed to injuries at Gandhi Hospital.

Dinesh Kumar, 22, and Bhagat Veera, 24, residents of Chawni in Yakutpura, were racing towards Chaderghat bridge in a Maruti Esteem and died on the spot when it rammed into a high-mast light post and hit a road divider. The accident occurred around 2.30 a.m. on Sunday. Six of their friends travelling in the car suffered serious injuries, the Chaderghat police said.

Ghastly accidents

Wall-poster shop worker Vivek, 21, died on the spot when the motorcycle he was riding hit against the wall of a building in a by-lane near Lingampally function hall of Kachiguda. "Part of the wall collapsed and some bricks fell on the victim and his friend Dorababu riding pillion," the Narayanaguda police said. The victim was a resident of Shahalibanda. Tailoring shop worker K. Ramesh, 24, died on the spot when the scooter he was riding skidded on the Krishnanagar road no. 5 near HB colony of Kushaiguda on Saturday night. His two friends riding pillion on the two-wheeler sustained injuries. While Sarangam broke his right leg, Bhikshapathi suffered bleeding injuries all over the body.
