HYDERABAD: Union Minister for Urban Development and Culture S. Jaipal Reddy on Sunday wanted the Exhibition Society to develop infrastructure at the Exhibition grounds here to meet international standards. "The society should bring in changes in the Exhibition in tune with the national and international developments on the industry front," he said promising the Central Government's cooperation. Mr. Reddy was speaking after formally inaugurating the All India Industrial Exhibition here on Sunday. The 45-day annual exhibition has about 2,500 stalls representing various segments of the industry involving 600 participants from across the country.
Steady growth
Mr. Jaipal Reddy said the Industrial Exhibition, which started in a humble way by the Osmania Graduates Association in 1938, had grown by leaps and bounds over the years. Appreciating the efforts of the society in promoting education, especially among women in particular, exhorted them to continue their efforts for setting up medical and nursing colleges to meet the requirements of the backward Telangana region. He said he proposed to do something "memorable" for Hyderabad during his tenure as the Urban Development Minister and appropriate action would be initiated once the plans took a concrete shape. The society president and Home Minister K. Jana Reddy said the Government would take steps to expedite alienation of the 20-acre existing Exhibition site in favour of the Society.
Geeta Reddy's plea
The Exhibition was now running on lease, which would be terminated once the alienation process was completed. The proposal, which came up for discussion during the last Cabinet meeting, was deferred on technical problems. These would be sorted out by the next Cabinet meeting. Major Industries Minister J. Geeta Reddy wanted the society to think about setting up a women's college in her Gajwel constituency to meet the requirements of Medak district, which was one among the most backward districts in Telangana. Information and Public Relations Minister Mohd. Ali Shabbir also spoke.
