Celebrations go off without any hitch

Staff Reporter

There was no violence on New Year's Eve

BANGALORE: With adequate security arrangements, the police ensured incident-free New Year celebrations in the city. The task was made onerous in the wake of attack at the Indian Institute of Science. There were threats of human bombs too.

The City Police, under the guidance of Police Commissioner Ajai Kumar Singh, were able to help instil confidence in Bangaloreans.

Dr. Singh noted that the arrangements were so made that it did not affect revellers and at the same time curbed violations. Incidents of drunken revelry, obstructing passers-by to wish and the like which were hitherto reported, had no place on Saturday.

Even the traffic on Mahatma Gandhi Road, which was diverted in the previous years from 8 p.m. till midnight, was allowed till 11.30 p.m., posing least inconvenience to commuters. Traffic was blocked only on the stretch of Brigade Road and two flyovers - Mysore Road and Residency Road.

To instil a sense of security, Dr. Singh came to Brigade Road just before midnight and joined the revellers in ushering in the New Year.

He said he was there to tell the masses everything was in order and there was no room for fear. Saturday evening also witnessed a flag march by armed police personnel on Mahatma Gandhi Road, the usual place of New Year revelry.

Quick reaction teams had taken position near Cauvery Emporium and Opera Theatre — places near Mahatma Gandhi Road and Brigade Road. Three Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCPs) — one on Mahatma Gandhi Road between Anil Kumble Circle and Cauvery Emporium, one from Cauvery Emporium to Trinity Circle and the other on Brigade Road — were deployed for supervision of security arrangements. Two DCPs were posted elsewhere.
