dated January 3, 1956: PM's call to scientists

Prime Minister Nehru has said that though the atom and hydrogen bombs constituted a great danger to the world, much more dangerous than these deadly weapons were the "kind of atom bombs that people nurse in their hearts and bosoms." Inaugurating the 43rd session of the Indian Science Congress in Agra on January 2, he said it was, therefore, highly important to deal first with the atom bombs "in our minds and hearts." Gandhiji used to say that "if you have a sword in your heart, then be out with it and use it rather than nurse it in your heart and bosom. It soils you and others and spreads hatred and ill-will if you go on nursing it in your mind and bosom." Mr. Nehru called upon the scientists all over the world to always keep in mind the consequences likely to follow from their actions. There was today a conflict arising in the minds of some great scientists of the world as to how far they were justified in using their ability towards ends which might produce evil and bring about destruction and devastation. It was, no doubt, a legitimate conflict. One might be a good scientist, but he was essentially a sensitive human being.
