This Day That Age
The British and Egyptian flags were hauled down at the Governor-General's Palace in Khartoum on January 1 and replaced by the tricolour of the new Sudanese Republic as the Nile State became independent after 56 years of Anglo-Egyptian rule. At an impressive ceremony in Parliament earlier, letters announcing British and Egyptian recognition of the new State were read out and a committee of five men was formally sworn in to assume the powers of Head of State. The five, accompanied by the Premier, Mr. Ismail el Azhari, then headed a procession of members of Parliament to the palace of the former Governor-General, Sir Knox Helm. Mr. El Azhari thanked all those who had helped the Sudan become independent.
