Security concerns

This refers to the editorial, `Building institutional security,' (Dec. 31). I agree that an educational and research institution cannot and should not be dressed up like a military base. Any measures taken must be as inconspicuous as possible.

Too much security will prove to be obtrusive and will impinge on the free and open environment that scholarship thrives in. Moreover, as the editorial correctly points out, absolute security is simply not possible and it will be yet another instance of merely addressing the symptoms and not the root of terrorism.

Rohit Chhiber,
Jaipur

The IISc attack needs to be condemned in the toughest language. However, this should not lead to excessive security and restrictions in scientific institutions.

Every year, especially during the summer, hundreds of students from all over India visit such campuses to engage in research. I hope the beefed-up security measures after the IISc incident will not target and cause problems for such students.

Nitin Tanwar,
Chandigarh

Pre-emptive measures have to be articulated, analysed for effectiveness, and implemented with resolute authority and seriousness. Let us not wait for acts of terror to serve as reminders.

Deepti Kashyap,
Bangalore

The amazing thing about the terror attack in Bangalore is that the police did not know the number of foreign delegates attending the international conference going on at the IISc at the time. Does this mean that the militants are more organised than our police personnel?

Vishaal Vyas,
Hyderabad

No other instance in the recent past comes to mind where an academic institute was attacked by terrorists. A fool-proof method to prevent such attacks in future should be evolved.

P.V. Satyanarayana,
Hyderabad
