Minority rights

This refers to the article `Minority rights and responsibilities' (Dec. 31). The state of Muslim institutions in Kerala is different from that in north India. In Kerala, the Muslim institutions are comparable to those run by other communities and the government itself. Muslims in Kerala also have an important role in State politics. But the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes in Kerala, who have no space in State politics, are being betrayed by the majority as well as the minority communities. The Constitution (104th) Amendment is a blow for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, at least in Kerala.

Jeevan Job Thomas,
Vengola, Kerala

It is imperative to recognise the rights of Muslims and for upper class Muslims to empower the less privileged among them.

S. Bhagat,
Nagpur, Maharashtra
