ERODE: The Erode Municipal Council gave its consent for constructing an Underground Drainage (UGD) for the Municipal area at a cost of Rs. 38 crores. A resolution in this regard was passed at a council meeting recently. A resolution for the scheme was passed five years ago, but was not executed for various reasons. Later, a revised estimate was prepared. As per the new estimate Rs. 10 crores will be obtained as subsidy from the State Government, Rs. 19 crores to Rs. 20 crores as loan from various funding agencies and Rs. 7 crores to Rs. 8 crores from the municipal funds and residents of the 45 ward of the Municipality. The Municipal Commissioner, K.P. Selvaraj, said on Monday that under the revised scheme the Municipality would lay pipelines on every street and roads connecting the house toilet's septic tank. The waste would be taken to Lakkapuram where it would be treated. The treated water would be used for agricultural purpose. The sediments would be converted into manure and sold to farmers. The Commissioner said that every month a maintenance charge would be collected from each house. The charges would be calculated based on the surface area of the house. A minimum deposit of Rs. 5,000 would be collected from each house before the construction begins. Mr. Selvaraj said it would take another six months for the commencement of the scheme. The chairman of the Erode Municipality, M. Subramanian, said already the sewage treatment plant was constructed by the TWAD on 27 acres at Lakkapauram. A crack was noticed in the tank and the sewage water collected from town has percolated to the nearby about 1000-odd houses. He expressed the fear that the tank to purify waters might affect people living nearby areas.
