`250 satellite linked village resource centres by March'

Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) G. Madhavan Nair has said that at least 250 villages in the country will have satellite-linked Village Resource Centres (VRC) by March this year, taking the benefits of space technology to the rural people.

Inaugurating a two-day national workshop on ``Space Applications for Mankind'' here on Monday, Mr. Madhavan Nair said the VRC project, jointly launched by the ISRO and the M. S. Swaminathan Research Foundation in October 2004, would provide multiple services such as tele-medicine, tele-education and remote sensing applications to remote villages.

Mr. Madhavan Nair said that at least 10,000 `virtual classrooms' would be functioning in the country by the close of 2006.
