KANNUR: The Kannur University Teachers' Collective (KUTC) has alleged violation of the university statute in teacher recruitment for the PG Diploma in Virtual Media course sanctioned by the University Grants Commission to the Department of English. KUTC president Babu Anto and secretary K.M. Shareef said at a press conference here on Monday that the provision in the statute that the Head of the Department concerned be included in the selection committee for recruitment of lecturer/reader posts had been `violated' during the interview on December 28 for filling the lecture post in the department. The KUTC would resort to agitation if the university did not revoke the recruitment, they said. Dr. Anto and Dr. Shareef said the Department of English of the university was the first institution in the country to start the PG diploma in innovative, multi-disciplinary and job-oriented Virtual Media course. The UGC had allocated Rs.30 lakhs to the department to start the course, including meeting expenditure towards payment of salary for a full-time teacher and purchase of electronic equipment. The recruitment in violation of the statute, they said, raised the concern that the course would be deprived of the UGC grant. The KUTC office-bearers also said the High Court had already provisionally stalled recruitment to 10 of the 18 teacher posts sanctioned to the university by the UGC. The university was also losing the sanctioned grant because of this, they said.
