TIRUR: The Malappuram revenue district school youth festival got off to a jubilant start at Government Vocational Higher Secondary School, Kalpakanchery, near here on Monday. Abdussamad Samadani, MP, inaugurated the school mela. Arimbra Mohammed, District Panchayat president, presided over the function. A cultural procession taken out in the afternoon literally plunged the little village of Kadungattukundu into a mood of celebration. Apart from school children from across the district, several clubs and voluntary organisations presented tableaux in the procession. C. Abdul Hameed, deputy director of education, hoisted the flag. The inaugural day witnessed competitions in composition and drawing. TTI festival, Arabic festival and Sanskrit festival are also being held simultaneously. Competitions were held for students in watercolour and oil painting, pencil drawing, cartoon, English and Malayalam essay writing and story and poem writing. For teacher trainees, competitions were held in painting, Malayalam essay writing, story and poetry writing and clay modelling. Competitions in translation and poster creation were held as part of the Arabic festival. In the Sanskrit festival for high school and upper primary students, competitions were held in writing of essay, story and poem. No results were announced on Monday. About 5,000 students representing 17 educational sub-districts are taking part in the mela. They include teacher trainees from 14 teacher training institutes (TTIs) in the district. Competitions will be held at 11 venues on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. On Tuesday, the main venue will host competitions in Kathakali vocal, Chenda, Ottamthullal and Chakyarkoothu. Kerala Natanam, Bharatanatyam (UP) and Mohiniyattom (UP) will take place on stage three, said the organisers.
