ALAPPUZHA: Chief Minister Oommen Chandy has promised houses for people who had been staying in relief camps in Ambalappuzha for three months after losing their dwellings at Kakkazham, Neerkunnam and nearby areas in sea erosion. Mr. Chandy made the announcement after visiting the camps on Monday, along with Minister for Tourism K.C. Venugopal and officials. The Chief Minister said the Government would allot money for buying land to build the houses by Wednesday. A sum of Rs. 1,000 each had been given to the families. He asked the district administration to provide free rations to them. Mr. Chandy announced that the Government had sanctioned Rs. 8.89 crores for repairing the seawalls at Thottappally, Anandeswaram, Vadi, Punnapra and Komana areas. Another Rs. 2.4 crores had been allotted for building 1,816 metres of seawall at Valanjavazhi and Kakkazham areas, experiencing repeated tidal attacks. He said work on Takazhi bridge would resume on Wednesday.
