THANJAVUR: The house of saint composer Sri Thyagaraja, located on Thirumanjana Veedhi at Thiruvaiyaru in Thanjavur district, is being converted into a memorial.

The work is going on at a cost of Rs. 20 lakhs, says G. Rangaswamy Moopanar, president, Sri Thyagabrahma Mahotsava Sabha.

"The house ... has become so dilapidated that we decided to construct a memorial in its place. As devotees and music lovers wanted to do `dhayanam' in the house, a `dhayana mandapam' is coming up."

The memorial will also have a room where books on Thygaraja and video and audiocassettes will be stored and a hall in which the works of Shyama Sastrigal and Muthswamy Dikshithar will be kept.

An arch will be built in the front. The elevation will look like a "gopuram". Thygaraja's `kritis' will be played in the memorial.

It is said the saint composer had darshan of Lord Rama, Lakshmana, Sita and Hanuman in the house after he chanted "Ramanama" crores of times.

The memorial will also house a bronze idol of the composer.

Thyagabrahma Mahotsava Sabha, which conducts the annual aradhana, is constructing a memorial near the samadhi on the Cauvery banks.

The memorial will be in the form of a Tambura, an instrument used by the composer. It will have a music library and rooms for devotees to stay.

This year aradhana is celebrated between January 16 and 21.

Pancharathna Kritis will be rendered between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. on January 19, on Pushya Bagula Panchami, the day when the saint attained samadhi.
