Special Correspondent
HYDERABAD: The Special Court for Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) cases here has taken a serious view of the premier investigating agency continuously seeking extension of judicial remand of Monica Bedi, the companion of underworld gangster Abu Salem, without documentary evidence on the progress of the probe in her case. Against a two-week extension of remand sought by the CBI, Special Judge C.V. Subrahmanyam on Monday granted time only till January 12. He asked the CBI Public Prosecutor to file a progress report. The prosecutor expressed the agency's intention to file an additional charge sheet in the case against Ms. Bedi for possessing a fake passport which would serve the purpose.
Counsel's objection
Ms. Bedi's counsel, S. Pradeep Kumar, objected to the CBI's plea for extension of remand on the ground that some more persons accused in the fake passport case were to be apprehended and her detention was necessary to carry out further investigation. Mr. Kumar contended that the CBI was seeking extension mechanically without informing the court about the progress of the investigation. The agency had filed similar applications when the remand was extended in the past. The judge made it clear to the Public Prosecutor that further extension of remand on January 12 would depend on production of the progress report. He would have to be satisfied that the extension was justified. He asked Ms. Bedi to furnish the names of advocates representing her as replacements sought by her were not documented.
