Ship towed out of Toulon naval base by four Navy tugs under heavy security
|
Paris:
The progress of the Clemenceau, the asbestos-laden decommissioned French aircraft carrier which left for dismantling in India on December 31, has been hampered by heavy seas and turbulent weather, sources here said.
Bad weather prevented a Dutch tugboat hired to tow the 265-metre-long ship from taking control of the vessel on the high seas.
The ship was towed out of the Toulon naval base in southern France by four Navy tugs under heavy security on December 31.
A naval helicopter hovered overhead and a naval frigate was on the ready to intervene to prevent any attempts by environmental groups to board the ship or in any way prevent its departure.
