MADURAI: "Instruments play a very significant role in music. In fact, it has been said without instruments, music is no music at all. Instruments constitute ornaments to music, they add colour and embellish music. Even human voice itself is considered an instrument and it is called `Gaatra veena," said Shobhana Ramachandhran, president, Sri Sathguru Sangeetha Samajam. After inaugurating the 54th anniversary day celebration of Music and Arts festival of the samajam here on Monday, Ms. Shobhana, said that this year both the awards Madhurakala Praveena and Birudhu Madhurakala Mani were conferred on instrumentalists. The samajam's mission was to propagate the art and science of traditional music, to encourage the young artistes, to recognise, support and honour senior ones by conferring them with prestigious awards. The January season has a pride of place and it had to be sustained forever. It is fair to say that glorious days are ahead for Carnatic music, she said and added that youngsters have entered the field and shine like bright stars on the horizon and they would ensure the future of carnatic music. Ms. Shobhana conferred the Madhurakala Praveena award on violin vidwan Padmashree T.N. Krishnan and handed over a gold medal and a cash award of Rs.15,000. She also presented a cash award of Rs.5000 and a certificate of merit to Sangeetha Vidwamsisni M.K. Kamalakumari on the occasion. M.P.N. Ponnusamy, Nagaswara vidwan, conferred the Birudhu Madhurakala Mani award on Mridanga vidwan, Kalaimamani K.S. Chellappa. He was also presented with a silver medal and a cash award of Rs.10,000. Birudhu Madhurakala Mani has been instituted for the first time this year to recognise a musician, who has served the cause of music in Madurai for a considerable length of time. As many as 42 prizes were distributed to winners of music competition conducted by the samajam recently. The vice-president, B. Ganapathi Sarma, the honorary secretaries, V. Sundaresan, K.S. Narayanaswamy were present. The strings of violin of T.N. Krishnan emitted melodious music that pervaded the Lakshmi Sundaram Hall making the delighted audience to nod their heads in approval and appreciation.
