300 huts destroyed in fire

Srikakulam: In a major fire accident, nearly 300 thatched houses were reduced to ashes at Chillapeta Rajam village in Ranasthalam mandal, about 30 km from here, on Monday.

Sheep, goat and poultry birds perished in the accident. Initial estimates put the loss at Rs.1 crore. The fire, which broke out when most of the people were busy in the fields attending to harvest work, made nearly 1,000 people homeless. District Collector A. Koteswara Rao visited the village and announced relief measures.
