Live telecast of science congress inaugural

HYDERABAD : The Hyderabad Doordarshan Kendra will telecast live the inauguration of the 93rd Indian Science Congress and laying of the foundation for the Outer Ring Road by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on January 3 at 9.30 a.m. and 1 p.m. respectively.

It will also telecast live the proceedings of the congress on January 4 at 8.45 a.m. as also the inaugural of the three sessions in which President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam will participate the next day at 10 a.m. - Special Correspondent

40 children taken ill

after mid-day meal

KHAMMAM : Forty children, who had the mid-day meal, were taken ill at the upper primary school at Sitarampatnam in Palvancha mandal on Monday.

The students were hospitalised. A team of 20 doctors attended on the children. ITDA Project Officer J. B. Prakash and Kothagudem MLA Vanama Venkateswara Rao visited the hospital. - Staff Reporter

Migratory birds

Nellore : Arrival of migratory birds, mainly pelicans, have picked up at the Pulicat and Nelapattu sanctuaries of Nellore district.

According to an estimate, around 3,000 birds have already arrived at Nelapattu, some even from far away places like Siberia. In view of recent heavy rain, tanks and reservoirs in the areas are filled to the brim resulting in abundant availability of fish and other types of food for the birds in the sanctuaries. - Staff Reporter

Housewife ends life

Kakinada: In what is stated to be the culmination of a petty quarrel between a couple, a housewife, Paramata Latha, 24, allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself at Gandepalli on Monday. -Correspondent

Explosive material

seized

Sangareddy: Task force police from Hyderabad recovered explosive material kept in a fertilizer bag from the residence of Mukhtar Patel at Chalki village of Zaheerbad mandal on Monday following a tip-off by Shakeel, Hazi and Majid three of the accused in the task force office blast.

A bag full of explosive material was kept in his house by one Sizamuddin, a resident of Chalki now settled in Hyderabad.

According to the police, the task force sleuths arrived at the old man's house in the morning and seized the bag. - Staff Reporter

Music festival

CHENNAI: Title of `Sangeetha Sironmani' will be conferred on T.N. Krishnan, violin maestro, on the occasion of the Thyagaraja music festival to be held at the NGO buildings, Chittoor, on January 8.

directive to varsity

TIRUPATI : The Chittoor District Consumer Forum has directed the Registrar and Director of B.R. Ambedkar Open University to pay a compensation of Rs.3,000 and Rs.1,000 towards litigation expenses to a student for deficiency of service.

Though E. Srilakshmi, a B.Com student of Pakala, paid Rs.1,200 towards the third year study material on July 5, 2004, she did not receive the same for a year. - Staff Reporter

10 hurt in clash

KURNOOL : Ten Scheduled Caste persons were injured in a clash between them and Backward Classes at Ramakrishnapuram under the Nandivargam police station limits in Kurnool district on Sunday night.

The SCs alleged that a group of people in the village were attacked to terrorise them to vacate their houses in the mining area. MRPS activists staged a demonstration here on Monday to protest against the attack. Meanwhile, the BCs complained to the police that a group of SCs humiliated a woman. - Staff Reporter

CHITTOOR: Anti Corruption Bureau sleuths on Monday raided the NSS office in the Collectorate and arrested Rajakumari NSS Deputy Tehsildar for allegedly taking bribe of Rs. 6000 from Lakshman NSS agent Tirupati. She had allegedly demanded the bribe for enrolling persons into NSS scheme. - Correspondent

KURNOOL: Supporters of CPI(M) staged a protest against the proposal to introduce user charges in Government hospitals here on Monday. The protesters led by party district secretary T. Shadrak and city secretary K. Prabhakar Reddy staged a demonstration and burnt the effigy of `user charges.' The leaders said the Congress Government, which came into power promising to undo the anti-people policies of the TDP Government, should not reintroduce them under pressure from the World Bank. They plan to intensify the agitation if the Government went ahead with the move. - Staff Reporter

Legal awareness camps

KURNOOL: The Juvenile Justice Board plans to conduct legal awareness camps on January 8 (Nandyal), 15 (Dhone), 22 (Adoni), 29 (Atmakur) and February 5 (Kurnool), according to a press statement by member magistrate D. Narasimhacharyulu. He said the campaign was intended to create awareness about the provisions of Juvenile Justice Act 2000 as child offenders could not be treated like adult offenders. - Staff Reporter

Thatched houses gutted

Nellore: Property worth Rs. 45,000 was lost in a fire mishap which completely razed three thatched houses in Janaganamana Colony of Old Vedayapalem area of the town, on Monday. Fire tenders rushed to the spot and ensured that the fire did not spread to other areas. Electric short circuit was said to be the reason for the fire. - Staff Reporter

Chirala authorities

Hyderabad: The delay in filing full-fledged counter-affidavit in the High Court has led to imposition of heavy costs upon the authorities. The

Chirala Municipality was shown as respondent in a writ petition filed by Ashok Kumar challenging the action of the authorities in permitting a retail petroleum outlet at Church road. The petitioner said that it was a residential area. When the case came up for hearing on Monday, it was informed that counter-affidavit of the authorities was served upon counsel for the petitioner at the last minute, which led to adjournment. The bench directed the authorities to pay Rs.5,000 as costs and then take steps to recover the same from the officer who has caused this delay in filing the counter affidavit. - Legal Correspondent

New cellular

tariffs announced

ELURU: The Telecom District General Manager L. Ananthram on Monday said pre-paid cellular tariffs were revised with effect from January 1. In (Excel) pre-paid service calls made within the BSNL network within the State from cell to cell, WLL and land line numbers would be charged at 90 paise per minute and for other networks Rs 1.20.

Calls beyond the State within the BSNL network from cell to cell, WLL and land line numbers would be charged at Rs 2 per minute and for other networks it would be at Rs 2.40, the General Manager added. - Staff Reporter

SP' gesture

to poor

ELURU: The New Year celebrations by the police got a humanitarian touch with the Superintendent of Police M. Jaganmohan Reddy distributing the sweets and fruits, which he received along with greetings from various sections of people, among members of a denotified tribe, Parthies.

The Special Branch police led by Circle Inspector G. Muralikrishna distributed the sweets and fruits in Parthi colony on the city outskirts last night on behalf of the SP. They extended a similar gesture to the inmates of old-age home and the poor people from Gangireddula community. The Parthies, also known as `Nakkalollu' or `poosalollu', honoured the CI and Sub-Inspector G. Rajivkumar with the garlands of beads of their own make.

In this connection, the Parthies brought to the notice of the visiting `guests' the acute drinking water problem which they were facing. - Staff Reporter

BSNL tower inaugurated

Srikakulam: Minister for Revenue and Relief Dharmana Prasada Rao has urged the BSNL to initiate steps to help rural people access telecom services.

Inaugurating the Rs. 45 lakh cell tower in Mabugam village, about 35 km from here on Sunday evening, Mr. Prasada Rao expressed happiness over the steps taken by the department to make available cell services. Telecom facility was essential for the all-round development of rural areas, he said. Deputy General Manager D. V. Ramana Murthy also spoke. - Special Correspondent

Rajahmundry: A National Service Scheme (NSS) special camp was held here on Monday at SKR Women's College. Speaking on the occasion MLA Rowthu Suryaprakasa Rao said that students should not merely join NSS for some certificate but should render service to the poor.. Former councillor dead

Rajahmundry: Former councillor and Innispeta Cooperative Bank former vice-president M. Subbi Reddy (80) died here on Sunday night following a massive heart attack. The veteran Communist leader also served as Praja Natya Mandali district president. Meanwhile, former secretary of Rajahmundry Chamber of Commerce Y. Satyanandam (68) also died on Sunday night due to cardiac arrest. - Staff Reporter

Site for software park

Kakinada: The site for the proposed software technology park in Kakinada would be acquired soon after receiving funds, said Collector A.K. Singhal here on Monday. He said M.M. Pallamraju, MP, and Chairman of the parliamentary standing panel on IT had asked him to identify a suitable site. He said about 20 acres might be required for the park. Since no Government land was available, private land needed to be acquired for the purpose. - Correspondent
