Indian Bank, ICF in final

TUTICORIN: Indian Bank and Integral Coach Factory (ICF), both from Chennai, entered the final of the champion club football tournament for Universal Trophy in contrasting styles here on Monday.

Scoring twice in each half, ICF outplayed Sporting Union, Chennai 4-0, whereas Indian Bank had to struggle hard before disposing Chennai Customs 1-0.

In the ICF-Sporting Union match, Suresh Kumar opened the account for ICF in the 13th minute, following a melee inside the box. In the 28th minute, Ashok Kumar took a powerful shot towards the goal, but the ball hit one of the defender's hand inside the box and rebounded and the Sporting Union men, thinking a penalty would be awarded and did not follow the rebound, but international referee Sankar allowed it for advantage and Venkatesan made use of the advantage by netting the second goal. In the 52nd minute, Ashok Kumar was about to score from inside the box but Sporting defender Saravanan tripped him and rightly Sankar pointed to the dreaded spot.

Ashok Kumar took the spot kick and made no mistake. Suresh Kumar completed the tally in the 60th minute with a powerful grounder from 30-yards range.

In the other match, Ticken Singh volleyed home a free throw by Andrew in the 20th minute. Customs tried hard to get the equaliser but Bankmen defended successfully the lone-goal lead till the end. — Sports correspondent

Chess championship

The 19th National under-13 (boys and girls) chess championship will be held at Howrah from January 5 to 11. More than 225 participants from all parts of the country are expected for the 11-round FIDE Swiss league meet. The tournament will offer a total prize fund of Rs. 1 lakh 60 thousand.
