BANGALORE: The "war" between the State Government and private professional institutions conducting postgraduate courses has created doubts in the minds of students about the process of admission and the fee structure. They are confused about which set of rules will be made applicable to them: the one framed by the Government or that framed by the Consortium of Medical, Engineering and Dental Colleges in Karnataka (COMED-K). With the Government recently notifying the procedure for admission to postgraduate courses, as against that notified by COMED-K, scores of students have not sent applications for admission. Sources in COMED-K said the number of applications has come down from 50 to 15 a day. The consortium has received 400 applications for 1,000 medical and dental seats in private colleges. Legal experts say the students are at risk of not getting a seat or not securing approval for their admission if they do not apply now. January 9 is the last date to submit applications. Madusudhan R. Naik, legal advisor to COMED-K, said that if the Supreme Court allows the consortium to conduct an entrance examination for the current year, students who have not sent applications because the State has formulated rules could lose out. Moreover, the Medical Council of India rules will not permit admission of students after the due date. Other experts said students could apply now for COMED-K seats.
Refund possible
Even if the State rule comes into play this year, they could seek a refund from college managements. Meanwhile, private managements who have filed a petition in the Supreme Court challenging the new rules and legislation are likely to make a mention before the court this week.
