NEDUMBASSERY: SNDP Yogam general secretary Vellappally Natesan on Monday said the Nair Service Society's (NSS) stand against appointing non-Brahmins as temple priests showed disrespect for the Supreme Court judgment. Talking to reporters at the Cochin International Airport at Nedumbassery, he said a Supreme Court order in a case three years ago had clearly stated that anyone belonging to the Hindu community who was well versed in temple rituals could be appointed a priest. Asked whether disagreement over the issue would affect the SNDP-NSS unity, Mr. Natesan said the SNDP Yogam's aim was to build unity among all Hindu communities, from Adivasis to Brahmins, and not just unity with the NSS. He said the IUM L's call for implementation of the Narendran Commission report was mere election rhetoric. Mr. Natesan added that though the SNDP Yogam would continue to exert its influence as a political force, it was not in favour of forming a political party. Our Reporter adds from Palakkad: The Kerala Brahmin Sabha has opposed the move of the TDB to appoint non-Brahmins as priests in temples under the Board, according to a statement here by the Sabha.
