`Parents are forcing their children to take up a career in engineering or medicine'

LIGHT OF SCIENCE: Minister for Science Basavaraj Horatti lighting a lamp to inaugurate the three-day science exhibition in Bijapur on Monday.

BIJAPUR: Three-day State level science exhibition got off to an enthusiastic start here on Monday with 600 children from various high schools participating in it with their science models.

Minister for Science, Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Basavaraj Horatti, who opened the fair, voiced concern over declining interest in pure sciences among the students.

He said very few parents wanted their children to become scientists or teachers. Even before the children joined the Pre-University Course (PUC), they are tutored for Common Entrance Test.

It is feared that soon science and technology institutions may not find qualified teachers. Parents should understand that there are enough job opportunities in the field of science.

Admitting that allocation for education has been declining in successive budgets, he said the quality of teaching was dwindling at school and college level.

Besides providing good infrastructure for educational institutions, the country needs to evolve refresher courses to keep the faculty up-to-date with the happenings in their subjects. Referring to science park projects at divisional headquarters, including Bangalore, Mr. Horatti said all the districts will soon have such centres, which will be developed at the cost of Rs. 2 crores each. Referring to an assurance given by the Minister that a science park will be sanctioned to Bijapur within a week based on the availability of suitable land, Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Mohsin said a two-acre plot will be given for the purpose.

Bijapur Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer Rajeev Ranjan said students have prepared their science models on five themes and a best model will be selected from each section and the winning team will be sent for south zone exhibition to be held in Pondichery this month end.

Bijapur MLA Appasaheb Pattanashetti presided over the function.

A.C. Roy Award winner S.J. Nagalotimath and the Commissioner for Public Instruction P.S. Vastrad spoke. Deputy Director of Public Instruction Bhaskar Bhat welcomed the gathering.

V.B. Darbar High School Principal G.N. Deshpande proposed a vote of thanks.
