Kerala School Games begins today

Thiruvananthapuram: Competitions will be held in 15 disciplines in the 49th Kerala School Games to be held at 11 venues across the city from Tuesday.

The Education Minister E.T. Mohammed Basheer said in a press conference here on Monday that over 6,500 boys and girls, representing the 14 revenue districts, would attend the six-day games. "All arrangements have been put in place for the smooth conduct of the event, which comes back to Thiruvananthapuram after a gap of 14 years," he said.

The initial three days will see action in ball badminton, hockey, kho-kho, volleyball (at the G.V. Raja Sports School), badminton (Indoor Recreation Centre, Shanghumughom), cricket (Medical College ground), chess (Government Model HSS auditorium), football (Chandrasekharan Nair Stadium and University Stadium), kabaddi (University Stadium), tennis (LNCPE, Kariyavattom), table tennis (YMCA hall), basketball (Central Stadium and St. Joseph's HSS courts), handball (SMV HSS ground) and wrestling (Central Stadium).

The competitions in all these disciplines, to conclude on January 5, will be conducted for two age groups, under-19 and under-17.

Athletics, the main attraction of the games, will be held from December 6 to 8. The competitions in the track and jump events will be held at the Central Stadium and the throw events at the Chandrasekharan Nair Stadium. Athletics, as usual, will be held for three age groups: under-19, under-17 and under-14.

An elaborate opening ceremony will be held on December 5 at the Central Stadium, on the eve of the athletics events. The games torch, being brought from Ernakulam, will be received at the city outskirts on January 4.

Mr. Basheer said a sum of Rs. 28 lakhs has been sanctioned for the smooth conduct of the meet. Prize money would be awarded to the individual winners and also to the best school.
