CHENNAI: The 13th-seeded Trambak Rubber Team, which caused a major upset defeating top-seeded Indian Railways in the semifinals, was leading Pankaj Kapadia by 31 IMPs at the end of the third round in the final of the National bridge championships here on Monday. Though Pankaj Kapadia took a slender lead of 6 IMPs in the first round, Trambak Rubber wiped out the deficit and went ahead by 43 IMPs in the second round. In the third session Pankaj Kapadia recovered only 12 IMPs leaving Trambak ahead with 31 IMPs. With one more round to go, the trend is in favour of Trambak Rubber. Earlier, Trambak Rubber toppled top-seeded Indian Railways winner of the last four editions in the semifinals. Trambak Rubber Team, represented by Hari Shankar Bajoria, Bivas Todi, Bhabesh Saha, A.B. Chakraborty, Govind Singha and Shankar Acharya, defeated the Railways team represented by Manas Mukherjee, Rana Roy, Pritish Kushari, Sumit Mukherjee, Snehashish Roy and Amarnath Banerjee by 147 International Match Points to 121. The Railways team took the first set 57-38. The second set was tight and ended in a tie with 33-33 score. The Trambak Rubber team won the third 35-16 to draw level. With the last 16 boards to go the score was tied 106-106. Trambak Rubber wrapped it up with a 41-15 win in the last set to complete a 147-121 triumph. In the second semifinal between Manyavar and Pankaj Kapadia's Team, the first session ended with Kapadia's leading 57-26. Manyavar recovered eight IMPs in the second set but Kapadia's kept a tight hold on the game winning the next two sets 35-30, 49-27 to win 179-129. The placings: Holkar Open Pairs: Group A and B: North-South: R. Raghavendra and R. Rajkumar 560 points. East-West: K.P. Baskaran and A. Selva Nayagam 552. Group C and D: North-South: N.R. Kirubakaramoorthy and K. Mukherjee 548. East-West: A.K. Nag and Sandeep Lahiri 536. Group E and F: North-South: Anil Padhye and Rajesh Dalal 620. East-West: Anal Shah and Finton Lewis 535. Indian Overseas Bank Open Pairs event for non-qualifiers: 1. S. Bhattacharya and P. Mazumdar 593 Match Points. 2. N.B. Rao and A.K. Thakur (552). 3. P.K. Thakur and Sagar Bhuiya (547). 4. B.S.
