KARUR: Over 100 people, including 70 women, belonging to hamlets in the Punjai Thottakurichi panchayat, led by the President, Parimalam (AIADMK), observed a protest fast to highlight the devastation caused by the effluents from the Tamil Nadu Newsprint and Papers Limited (TNPL), Kagithapuram, here on Monday. The protest, which started off a fast-unto-death, ended in just a couple of hours following the intervention of the Karur MLA, T.N. Sivasubramanian, and Revenue officials. The protestors claimed that the effluents from the TNPL had devastated fertile agricultural fields in Moorthipalayam, Orathai, Periapudur, Ganapathipalayam Pudur, Munnoothupalayam, Ammapatti, Sengattanoor and Ayyampalayam. Even the Pugalur Channel has been affected, they claimed. The area from Pazhamapuram to Ayyampalayam has been affected. Besides fields, the underground water has been rendered useless and polluted and health hazards were increasing by the day, the protestors claimed. They demanded that the TNPL should take remedial steps immediately to save further degradation. Mr. Sivasubramanian and the The Karur Revenue Divisional Officer, N. Vidhya Shankar, rushed to the spot and assured the protestors that they would impress upon the TNPL to do the needful. After being satisfied from the assurances from the officials, the protestors withdrew their fast.
