AIDS patients given drugs

There are five lakh HIV patients in India: Collector

Thanjavur: Five AIDS patients in Thanjavur were given drugs at the AIDS Anti Retroviral Therapy (ART) Centre at Thanjavur Medical College Hospital on Monday.

M.Veera Shanmugha Moni, Thanjavur District Collector distributed the drugs to the patients.

The Collector said that preliminary examinations were done for the past one month to fifty persons who had HIV infection at the centre. Among them, 20 persons were found having AIDS. Among them twelve persons were in a chronic stage and they were selected for providing the combined drug therapy at the ART centre.

To those whom drugs were given should take them throughout their life.

It will bring down the seriousness of the HIV infection. Their immunity level will increase. Combined drugs were given only at Chennai and Namakkal.

Hereafter, drugs will be given at the ART centre at Thanjavur Medical college also.

The Collector said that HIV infection was spreading very fast in the world.

Next to Africa, India had the maximum number of HIV patients. There are five lakh HIV patients in India.

Dr.Kalaiselvi, Dean, Thanjavur Medical college, Dr.Murugesan, Deputy Director, Health, Dr.Mohandoss, Dr.Santhalakshmi, Dr.Navaneethan and Dr.Jayaseelan participated in the function.
