KARUR: It has been planned to sell textile material worth over Rs. 40 lakhs at the district level handloom exhibition that is under way here, according to the Assistant Director, Handlooms and Textiles, G. Santhanakrishnan. Speaking after the inauguration of the district level handloom exhibition that is under way here since last Friday, Mr. Santhanakrishnan observed that the business transacted during the previous exhibition here in late August to early September when business to the tune of Rs. 35 lakhs was transacted, has made bold the department to pitch a higher sales target for the current expo, he said. A range of textiles including sarees, dhotis, lungis and bed spreads from a variety of co-operative societies from all over the state have been displayed in the 35 stalls in the expo being held here. Societies from Karur district itself have taken up around 15 stalls, he added. While eight co-operative societies were from Dindigul, many were from Kumbakonam, Tiruchi, Erode and other places. The Development Commissioner for Handlooms has extended a sum of Rs. Two lakhs for staging the exhibition while the Department of Handlooms and Textiles supports the move, he observed. A special rebate of 30 per cent has been allowed for all textile varieties, except the silk, in the exhibition.
