CHENNAI: Chief Election Commissioner B.B. Tandon will visit the State on January 9 and 10 to review issues related to preparations for the Assembly elections, according to Chief Electoral Officer Naresh Gupta. He told reporters here on Monday that Mr. Tandon would conduct the review meetings in Coimbatore on January 9 and Madurai on January 10. These would cover progress of electoral rolls revision and reorganisation of polling stations. Other aspects of preparedness for the elections would also be taken up. The situation in the northern districts would be reviewed later. Availability of sufficient number of electronic voting machines and other material required for polling in the event of an increase in polling stations, apart from the electronic photo identity card programme would also be reviewed at these meetings. Districts in the western region would be covered at the review meeting in Coimbatore and those in central, eastern and southern regions at the Madurai meeting, he said. The Delimitation Commission would hold a meeting on Tuesday and Wednesday in New Delhi to discuss with associate members issues relating to delimitation of constituencies in Tamil Nadu. "The meeting may be extended for another day if necessary." The Commission had been taking up the delimitation process district by district, Mr. Gupta added. Election Department sources said the meeting had been called against the backdrop of the tardy progress of the delimitation work in the State.
