CHENNAI: Union Ministers Pranab Mukherjee, P.R. Dasmunsi and Arjun Singh will, among others, take part in a campaign between January 5 and 8 to highlight the achievements of the United Progressive Alliance Government. According to Union Minister for Shipping, Road Transport and Highways T.R. Baalu, the campaign, to be held at Meenambakkam, would include cultural programmes and "pattimandrams." Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram and Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader Sitaram Yechuri would also participate.
"In principle" nod
He said the Central Committee on Infrastructure had given in principle clearance for laying six-lane roads in different parts of the country. Prior to taking up the project, the Golden Quadrilateral project would be completed. To a question on finalisation of dredging bids for the Sethusamudram Ship Channel Project, Mr. Baalu said Hyundai had emerged as the lowest bidder. Negotiations were on to sort out certain issues. "The company has sought more money as mobilisation advance, whereas we are for giving less funds. I hope such issues will be sorted out in 15 days."
Widening of NH 4
About the widening of the Maduravoyal-Kancheepuram segment of National Highway 4, which had overshot the deadline by two years, he said the required land was handed over to the NHAI only two months ago. The work would be completed soon. To another query, he said the State Government was yet to submit estimates for taking up repair works on flood-hit highways. The Central Government had sanctioned Rs. 133 crore for this purpose.
