A great honour, says the vocalist

CHENNAI: The 16th annual music festival conducted by the Papanasam Sivan Karnataka Sangeetha Sabha at Madipakkam was inaugurated on Monday.

The Papanasam Sivan Award was conferred on maestro M. Balamuralikrishna.

The award was presented to the senior musician by industrialist Nalli Kuppusamy Chetty, patron of the sabha.

Descendant of Saint Thyagaraja

Inaugurating the music festival, V. Vaikunth, former DGP, Tamil Nadu, described Balamuralikrishna as one who could be perceived as a `descendant of Saint Thyagaraja.'

A. Natarajan, former Director of Doordarshan Kendra, Chennai, hoped that Mr. Balamuralikrishna would receive the Bharat Ratna award.

In his acceptance speech, Mr. Balamuralikrishna said that it was a great achievement to receive an award named after the great composer Papanasam Sivan. S. Saraswathy, Bharatanatyam danseuse, lighted the traditional lamp. N. Thyagarajan, president of the sabha, welcomed the gathering.
