ATM installed

CHENNAI: The Teynampet branch (core banking solution branch) of the Indian Bank will now function from 463, Anna Salai, LR Swami Building, Teynampet. An automatic teller machine has also been installed next to the branch, which was declared open on Monday.

Elected

R.H. Govardhan, professor of orthopaedics, Madras Medical College, has been elected secretary of the Indian Orthopaedic Association. He takes over from H.K.T. Raza of Jabalpur and will hold the post for three years until 2008.

Dr. Govardhan, the first secretary elected from Tamil Nadu in the 50 years of the association, was elected during the golden jubilee conference of the association held in Mumbai last week. Dr. Govardhan is known for ilizarov technique, joint replacement surgery and handling people suffering from complex trauma.

Contact seminar classes

The Directorate of Distance Education of Madurai Kamaraj University will hold contact seminar classes at Anna Adarsh College for Women on Saturday and Sunday for the first year students of undergraduate and postgraduate degree courses, certificate and diploma courses and M. Phil. degree courses.

`Greedy algorithms'

Several associations of S.S. Sashun Jain College for Women in T. Nagar held meetings last week for their students. A professor from Piprenieou University in France spoke on `Greedy algorithms' at a programme hosted by the Computer Science Association. A vegetable-carving expert from Hotel Chola gave tips at the meeting hosted by the Visual Communication Association. Dr. Claramma Jose, reader in English Department, Loyola College, addressed students of the English Literary Association.

`Success and mind power'

Blood donation

Fifty-five units of blood were collected at a camp held at Tiru Vi ka Nagar Nadar Welfare Society in Peravallur on Monday.

The Lions Club of Velachery held the camp.

Parcel express train introduced

As a trial measure, Southern Railway introduced a millennium parcel express train from Chennai to Guwahati.

The first train left on Sunday with 15 full vans carrying 350 tonnes of parcels consisting of high value electronic and electrical goods, computers, tyres, confectioneries and general goods.

The parcel train brought additional revenue of Rs 10.5 lakhs. Based on the patronage the number of coaches will be increased.

There is also a proposal to run a similar parcel express to Delhi from here.

Those who are interested to make use of the facility are asked to register their demand, according to a Southern Railway release.
