TIRUMALA : New Year proved a happy beginning for the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams management, custodian of the hill temple of Lord Venkateswara here. In what is considered a record, the temple netted an income of Rs.1.62 crore on the New Year day on Sunday against Rs.1.18 crore last year. Of this, the temple hundi netted Rs.1.50 crore and the rest came from the sale of laddu prasadam. Briefing mediapersons, TTD Special Officer A.V.Dharma Reddy, said on Monday that 62,265 devotees had darshan of the presiding diety on Sunday. Over 34,340 devotees were given free food and some 47,700 `pulihora' packets distributed. Even though only 62,265 pilgrims could have had darshan of the Lord, figures given by the TTD Nitya Annadanam officials revealed that more than 82,000 devotees benefited under the free meals scheme or given `pulihora' packets.
