COIMBATORE: The Odanthurai panchayat, 40 km north of the city, will soon have a 350 KW windmill to help it meet its energy needs. K. Allaudin, Chairman and Managing Director, Tamil Nadu Energy Development Agency, says this is the first such project by a local body in the country. If it turns out to be successful, 60 more panchayats will go for wind energy, says District Rural Development Agency Project Officer, P. Jeyabalakrishnan. The State Government sanctioned the project for Odanthurai, and the details would be finalised by a district-level committee. Under the Remunerative Enterprises Scheme, panchayats went in for shopping complexes or similar projects that fetched them revenue. It was decided to set up a windmill under this scheme at Odanthurai and sell power to the Tamil Nadu grid. While revenue from this project would help the panchayat meet its energy expenses, the additional income from the sale of power could be used for development works. Panchayat president R. Shanmugam said the Rs. 1.70-crore project was likely to be commissioned by March-end.
