Delhi police alive to threats

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Delhi Police Commissioner K.K. Paul said on Monday intelligence inputs indicated that terrorist outfits were planning to carry out "fidayeen" attacks in the run-up to the Republic Day celebrations.

"There have been general inputs about possible suicide attacks in Delhi. However, things are being taken care of. The police are gearing up for the Republic Day celebrations," Dr. Paul said at a New Year function at the Police Headquarters here.

It is learnt that specific inputs had been received about militants belonging to Al-Badr, a splinter group of the Hizb-ul-Mujahideen. Nearly a dozen suspected militants belonging to Al-Badr and the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) are now under the scanner of intelligence agencies.

While the Al-Badr is known for targeting government installations and officials, the LeT has lately been targeting buildings and institutions of economic significance.

The same outfit is suspected to have masterminded the recent attack at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore.
