Congress, DIC(K) cross swords over ownership of NGO Bhavan

Ownership row over NGO Bhavan

Thiruvananthapuram: The two factions of the Kerala NGO Association, one owing allegiance to the Congress and the other to the Democratic Indira Congress (Karunakaran) (DIC-K) are locked in a bitter battle over possession of the State committee office at Bakery Junction.

While the official Congress faction led by Kampara Narayanan and R. Rajan Kurukkal maintained that those who left the organisation had no right over the name, flag and office of the association, the rival faction led by P.K. Raveendran and C. Raveendran accused Chief Minister Oommen Chandy of masterminding an operation to seize the NGO Bhavan by force.

In a pressnote issued here on Monday, Mr. Kampara Narayanan claimed that the association under his leadership was the genuine one.

He said the plot housing the association office was bought in 1985 with funds mobilised from the members.

"The property was registered in the name of eight members of the then State committee. Of the eight members, only one had crossed over to the DIC(K), all the others were still with the parent organisation. In this circumstance, the DIC(K) had no claim to the property or the building," he said.

Countering the argument at a press conference, Mr. P.K. Raveendran said the DIC(K) faction was the genuine owner of the building which was constructed in 1985 when K. Karunkaran Pillai was the president.

"Mr. Pillai was succeeded by Mangad Rajendran. I was elected president after Mr. Rajendran retired. Kampara Narayanan was ousted from the organisation in 2000."
