New variety of cotton to be tested

COIMBATORE: The Southern India Mills' Association - Cotton Development and Research Association (SIMA-CDRA) plans to raise its HB-3 variety on 1,000 acres during the next sowing season. According to a release, this variety is suitable to spin 80s to 100s count yarn and has been raised on 2.5 acres at Burhanpur, Madhya Pradesh.

The association plans to cultivate it on 1000 acres spread across Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh and Tamil Nadu next year. It is being cultivated at Elavampalayam, near Salem now.

The prices of extra long staple cotton variety has shot up this year with huge demands from the industry and the new SIMA variety will benefit the mills, says an industry source.

The release said that the fibre strength of the HB-3 variety is 29.3 g/tex with a micronaire of 3.30.

Its average yield is 25 quintals per hectare and has recorded a maximum yield of 39 quintals a hectare in a trial field.
