Lee for poll rolls revision

P. S. Suryanarayana

SINGAPORE: Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on Tuesday called for a revision of the voters list, amid speculation that he might seek a mandate of his own sooner than required. In exercise of powers under the Parliamentary Elections Act, Mr. Lee directed the Registration Officer to revise the registers of electors and complete the process on or before February 28. All citizens qualified to be voters as of January 1 will be covered under the revision. Mr. Lee took over as Prime Minister from Goh Chok Tong in 2004, and the next general election is due, in the normal course, by the middle of 2007. Asked about the prospects of a general election ahead of the due date, Mr. Lee had told The Hindu in a recent interview that a snap poll was "possible." He could ask for an electoral mandate "before then, by then."
