GUNTUR: The State Government has decided to make wearing of helmet compulsory while riding a two-wheeler anywhere in Andhra Pradesh and an order to this effect will be issued within this month.
Use of cell phones
Minister for Cooperation and Transport Kanna Lakshmi Narayana told reporters here on Tuesday that fastening of seat belts in cars would be compulsory and stringent punishment recommended for those utilising cell phones while driving a motorcycle or car. The punishment would be made deterrent, but people must understand that it was being done for their own good. Giving the example of an accident the Minister's son encountered recently, he said that he was alive today only because he wore a safety helmet. "After going out of the house, he remembered the helmet and came back to wear it, which saved his life. He was severely injured and the helmet got damaged," the Minister observed. Talking over cell phones was another bad habit many two-wheeler riders, especially youth, had developed which needed to be discouraged so that safety of others on the road was not in danger, Mr. Lakshmi Narayana said. On fastening of car belts, he said though a beginning was made in Hyderabad by Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, it would be made compulsory for all through an order empowering police and transport officials to take stringent action against violators.
