U.P. raises six new STF units

Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Government has raised six new units of the Special Task Force (STF) to tackle growing incidents of organised crime.

The State Government has released Rs 56 crores to buy modern weapons and create additional posts for the new `field units'.

The Home Department said here the creation of new units was essential following growing incidents of organised crimes in the State.

The STF is also responsible for checking and tackling the various terrorist groups active in the State. The new field units would soon come up in Varanasi, Gorakhpur, Allahabad, Kanpur, Meerut and Agra.

The creation of new units in Varanasi, Gorakhpur and Allahabad assumes significance following increased gang wars between mafias active in most eastern U.P. parts.

The STF, meanwhile, won accolades for gaining early leads in the Ayodhya fidayeen attack in July and gunning down of dreaded dacoit Nirbhay Gujjar.

During the year 2005, STF teams eliminated 14 criminals and arrested 70 others in various encounters. In kidnapping-for-ransom cases, the STF arrested culprits in at least four cases using electronic surveillance.

The STF recently claimed to have monitored cell phones of controversial Independent MLA Mukhtar Ansari for his alleged involvement in the assassination of Krishanand Rai MLA in November. -- UNI
