CHENNAI: Can you guess the value at which the British Government bought the Raj Bhavan property? The answer: 10,000 pagodas (Rs. 35,000). Of course, this was in 1821.

And which Governor was responsible for the purchase of what was then called Guindy Lodge? Thomas Munro (1820-27).

These and many more interesting historical data form part of the website www.tnrajbhavan.gov.in (or www.rajbhavan.tn.nic.in) which was launched by Governor Surjit Singh Barnala at a low-key function at Raj Bhavan on Tuesday.

Another Raj Bhavan in the State, which is located at Udhagamandalam, is also a heritage structure. It boasts of antique furniture, which can be viewed on the website.

There are web pages containing speeches given by the present Governor and events attended by him. Mr Barnala's paintings are also available.

Those who want to know the previous Governors of the State can get the details from the website.

As the Governor is also Chancellor of Universities in the State, there is a link to the portal of universities.

At the launch function, the Governor honoured S. Muthiah, historian, who was the consultant for the website project, and A. Mohan, deputy director-general of the National Informatics Centre, which designed the site.

Mr. Muthiah said that some more data needed to be incorporated on the website. Endorsing this view, Mr. Mohan said the NIC, which maintained the site, would update it regularly.
