Trambak Rubber wins Ruia Gold Cup

CHENNAI: Trambak Rubber Team lifted the Ruia Gold Cup, the symbol of supremacy in Indian bridge, in the 47th edition of the National championship, at the J.J. indoor basketball complex, here on Tuesday.

In the final, Trambak Rubber, represented by Hari Shankar Bajoria, Bivas Todi, Bhabesh Saha, A.B. Chakraborty, Govind Singha and Shankar Acharya, defeated Pankaj Kapadia's Team represented by Pankaj Kapadia (non-playing captain) J. Biswas T.K. Roy, Sadhan Ghosh, N.B. Saha and S. Bhattacharya, by 184 International Match Points to 106.

At the end of third round, Trambak Rubber was leading 123-92. In the last session, the victor gained another 47 IMPs to win the match.

Chennai has turned out to be a happy hunting ground for Trambak Rubber, which had won the Ruia Gold at the 1995 Nationals here. To the unseeded Team Pankaj Kapadia's credit, it must be said it did well to beat all the seeded teams on the way to the final and even gave the ultimate winner a scare in the first and third rounds.

Meanwhile, the first elimination of the Holkar Pairs is over and 60 pairs will take part in the semifinals along with six pairs from among the Ruia finalists.

The second elimination for Holkar Pairs will be played on Tuesday.

Oldest and youngest

The oldest player taking part in Nationals is the 84-year-old S. Nageswaran of Chennai, a retired Deputy Superintendent of Police. He has been playing for the last 66 years. The youngest player is the 17-year-old R. Ragavendra, a twelfth standard student of Chennai.
