Congress to blame for present crisis, says BJP

NEW DELHI: Accusing the Congress of failure to safeguard the interests of Delhiites with regard to the ongoing demolition drive, the Leader of the Opposition in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, Subhash Arya, on Tuesday alleged that the current tussle between the Congress leadership in the State Government and the civic body had led to undue delay in implementation of Master Plan 2021 resulting in the present crisis.

One-upmanship

Addressing presspersons here, the Bharatiya Janata Party leader said a game of one-upmanship was going on between the leaders in the Delhi Government and the MCD that was hurting the interests of general public. "The issue of unauthorised constructions has been debated for many years now but the Congress has failed miserably to find a permanent solution to this. Both the Delhi Government and the MCD leaders have conflicting views on the same irrespective of the hardships people have been facing due to citywide demolition drive," he said.

Accusing the Congress of having failed to fulfil its promises made during both Assembly and MCD elections, Mr. Arya said: "The present situation has arisen as the Delhi Government has failed to implement the Master Plan 2021 that could solve the city's civic problems once and for all. Population in the Capital is increasing fast, but the Government and the civic body have failed to implement a concrete plan to meet the growing civic needs of the people."

He also alleged that the Congress-ruled civic body has messed up revenue collections that were falling, affecting implementation of different welfare schemes. "Of the total target of Rs.1,370 crores in house tax collection, only Rs.375 crores had been realised so far. This is badly affecting development as well as welfare activities. The MCD administration has failed to properly implement the unit area method for calculation of property tax," he pointed out.

Corruption

Similarly, the MCD functionaries have failed to check corruption in the civic body and the Central Bureau of Investigation's recent raids on various MCD officials proved this. "The Congress leaders have also failed in improving civic conditions of the Capital. ," Mr. Arya said.
