TIRUPATI: The process of distribution of ration cards has picked up pace in the Tirupati municipality. While the process had been completed before the municipal elections in several civic bodies for obvious reasons, the process began in Tirupati only a week ago, as it did not go to polls. Panchayat secretaries and revenue staff were pressed into service for door-to-door survey and data collection. The cardholder, along with family members, needs to visit the nearest centre allotted to them on the specified date, which has been intimated to them in the form of tokens. Sophisticated Iris cameras are being employed to capture the image of eye, which is a more reliable system of personal identification compared to fingerprints. Integration of the data collected across the State would help eliminate duplication and fraud, besides avoiding discrepancies. The Government has opened 30 such centres in Tirupati to cover 60,000 households in 10 days. The expenditure incurred would be Rs. 7 per cardholder, apart from the Rs. 15 towards the image-capturing expenses.
