Detection, recovery rate in property-related crimes encouraging, says SP

In Tirupur public cooperation is important to prevent crimes

Coimbatore: The Coimbatore Rural District Police have registered 75 per cent detection and 66 per cent recovery in property related crimes in 2005, said the Superintendent of Police, Coimbatore Rural District, P. C. Thenmozhi on Tuesday.

As against the theft of properties valued at 2.92 crores during the year, Rs. 1.90 crores had been recovered. Grave crimes such as murder for gain and robbery after inflicting injuries reported during the year was 86.

A comparative study of crime during the previous years and 2005 showed a decline in the crime graph while the detection and recovery rates had soared, she said.

The number of anti-social elements detained during the year under Goonda's Act and Bootleggers Act was 25.

The detention provisions had been invoked against persons who were in the adverse notice of the police and those who had taken crime as their career, she said.

As against 54 cases of murder during 2004, it was 78 in 2005. Clarifying on the sharp increase, the SP said that murders were largely because of civil and family disputes and petty quarrels. There were only few cases of planned murders.

Registering murder cases against head of family where mass suicides were reported also contributed to the rise in the number.

Referring to crimes in Tirupur, Ms. Thenmozhi said that owners of hosiery and other ancillary units should ensure that antecedents of persons were verified before recruiting them.

The employer should insist on photograph, identity proof and fingerprints of the employee. This would help the police trace culprits when a crime was committed, she said.

In the Tirupur sub-division the police strength was only 250. This was in addition to the 80 personnel drawn from the Tamil Nadu Special Police Battalion and 20 from the Armed Reserve Police. In such a situation public cooperation and participation were important in combating crimes, she said.
