Renuka Dhinakaran from the School of Excellence in Law, Chennai, who represented India at the 6th Human Rights Summer School (HRSS) in Dhaka, won the Best Mooter Award. The HRSS on human rights and non-state actors was conducted by Empowerment through Law of the Common People in collaboration with the Academy for Educational Development in Bangladesh last month. Renuka, IV year B.A. B.L., along with three other participants from various other law schools, represented India at the event organised for participants from Bangladesh, Nepal and India. The Indian participants were selected on the basis of the Justice V.R. Krishna Iyer Legal Essay contest conducted by the Commonwealth Legal Education Association (Asia Chapter), in which Renuka came first. The resource persons at the summer school were from Bangladesh, Nepal, South Africa, Australia and USA and international organisations including the International Organisation for Migration made presentations. The school imparted rigorous training to the participants on various facets of human rights. The issues discussed varied from the international standards of human rights and enforcement mechanism, to economics, WTO and human rights, issues regarding women and children, migration and trafficking, rebellious lawyering, problems of refugees and the role of NGOs in these issues.
