CHENNAI: A range of artistic materials from Rajasthan, on display at the Rajasthali exhibition in Poompuhar on Anna Salai, calls for time to enjoy the creativity of the group of artisans from Jaipur and surrounding areas.

The artisans have come to Chennai to showcase beaded leather slip-ons, lacquer ware glass-and-bead embedded bangles, exquisitely designed marble items, cotton and velvet quilts, saris and garments.

Inlay works

Marble hurricane lamps, jars, hookahs and flower vases are inlaid with 22-carat gold foil and come from the house of Hanzraj Prajapati, an award-winning artisan based in Jaipur. Traditional gudhadi (handmade reversible, double colour quilts) are made in the villages around Jaipur. It takes two days to make this kind of quilt.

Cotton and silk quilts are priced between Rs. 400 and 1,500. Sequined crepe saris and block printed cotton saris and jewellery inlaid with semi-precious stones are also on sale.

Gift items

There are enough gift items to choose from: key chains, pens, earrings and a host of carved wood articles. Rajasthani paintings, done in Bundi, Udaipur and Bayar, are also available. Unlike the usual block printed bed sheets, Rajasthali has on offer multi-coloured block printed bed sheets, which require much skill, sales assistants point out. Most of the artisans learnt the work as children and have continued with the tradition, says N.L. Meena, in-charge of the exhibition.

The Rajasthan Small Industries Corporation Limited, Jaipur, has organised the exhibition, which has been sponsored by the Development Commissioner (Handicrafts), Ministry of Textiles, New Delhi. The exhibition will be on till January 20.
