Labour Minister Tanvir Sait chairs high-level meeting

Bangalore: The Government will review the rules drafted under the Shops and Business Establishments Act governing the working conditions of employees in business process outsourcing (BPO) companies, Minister of State for Labour Tanvir Sait has said.

He was chairing a high-level meeting on Tuesday with officials of the Police, Information Technology and Labour departments in this connection. The meeting was held in the wake of the rape and murder of Pratibha Murthy, an employee of a BPO firm.

The Government has received several suggestions to improve the service conditions of employees of BPO firms, particularly that of women who work during the night.

Study

After a thorough study of the suggestions and consultations with the managements and employees of BPO companies, the rules will be amended.

There will be an understanding between the transport agencies and the managements of BPO firms, he said.

The Government amended the Shops and Business Establishments Act in 2002, following a representation made by the managements of the BPO firms to enable them to employ women in night shifts.

Safety of women

"We will strive to ensure the safety of women employees, particularly those who work at night, in BPO and Information Technology companies," the Minister said.

Those who participated in the meeting included Principal Secretary for Home Sudhakar Rao; Secretary, Information Technology, M.N. Shankarlinge Gowda; and Additional Commissioner of Police, Bangalore, H.C. Kishore Chandra.
