CLOSE TIES: The members of the delegation from Calw at a function organised in their honour at the Gundert Foundation School in Thalassery.
THALASSERY: A delegation from Calw, the birthplace of Herman Gundert, visited the Gundert Foundation School here on Monday on their trip to this town to experience the legacy of the German missionary. The school welcomed the 21-member delegation at an informal function accompanied by cultural programmes by students. The school has become a symbol of the strong ties existing between Thalassery and Calw, thanks to the legacy of Dr. Gundert. The delegation included some citizens of Calw who had launched `Kinderhilfe Indien' (Help for children in India), a fund collection initiative in Calw, in association with the town council to assist the school. The school was started in 1996 by the Hermann Gundert Foundation (HGF) in memory of the German missionary who had made Thalassery his home for two decades, between 1839 and 1859. Welcoming the delegation, chairman of Hermann Gundert Foundation Murkot Ramunny said that Gundert's legacy would continue to perpetuate the bond between Thalassery and Calw. Mr. Ramunny said. He also appreciated the gesture of the citizens of Calw and its Mayor for extending financial assistance to the school. Speaking at the function, Karl Weis said that it was important that the people should communicate across nationalities. Gundert's life in India, including in this town, had influenced his grandson and German writer Hermann Hesse, he added.
