THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala Public Service Commission (PSC) is planning to further tone up its functioning and implement major reforms during the current year which happens to be its Golden Jubilee year. The Commission which held a two-day sitting here on January 3 and 4 decided to draw up programmes for the purpose. The meeting resolved to appoint expert committees to study the examinations and interviews being conducted by it with a view to making them more scientific and transparent. It also decided to bring out a pamphlet to apprise the applicants and the general public of the activities of the Commission and the procedures followed by it. Seminars and discussions to be attended by experts would also be organised during the jubilee year. The meeting which reviewed the work undertaken during 2005 was told that the PSC brought out 555 rank lists which was an all time record. As many as 28 lakh applications were disposed of. Arrear work was completed and the pending nature of applications ended through planned and time-bound work. The PSC was by and large able to implement its decision to bring out the rank list within one year of receipt of the applications. The PSC was able to bring about changes in the situation in which 92 lakh applications which were up to ten years old were pending only five years ago. A new system of handling the applications received each year in a time bound manner was introduced. During the current year, it would prepare an action plan covering the notifications to be published, rank lists to be prepared and other activities to be undertaken each month. It would draw up a recruitment plan by collecting the details of vacancies likely to occur in each department every year in advance and including only that many candidates in the rank list. The formalities connected with it would be finalised in consultation with the Government.
